app developer school

Mobile app development programs are among the newest and most sought-after education resources today. Students looking for a career path, working adults looking to add to their credentials for promotion, entrepreneurs adding to their money-making toolbox – a single app development course, or a short app development program, can make a big difference.

What is an App Developer?

There are more than 5 billion mobile phone users in the world – more, now than desktop or laptop users. And mobile apps are the brains and guts of the system. Mobile app developers are shaping our lives daily, in ways we may not even be aware of. We’ve progressed way beyond “There’s an app for that” – it’s a surprise if there’s not an app for that, whatever that might be. An app that tells you when a boring part of the movie is coming up so you can go to the bathroom? An app that tells you where you parked your car, in a pirate voice? An app that emulates an EMF reader for finding ghosts?

Long Live the App

Sure, there are more silly apps than you can shake a stick at, and let’s face it – like those ads in the back of your childhood comics, most of them don’t come anywhere near doing what they say. But for all those non-starters, there are apps that genuinely change people’s life, from productivity and health to finances and education.

Of course, someone has to make all those apps, and that’s the mobile app developer. Developers have to plan what the app will do and how it will do it; design what the app will look like and how it will work; test the beta versions and debug any errors; and get the app out where people can use them. Sometimes, that’s a whole team of people, with specialists focusing on design, user experience, or testing, but often, one person can do the whole process from start to finish.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, computer and IT occupations are expected to grow by 13% from 2016 to 2026 – much faster than the average of 8% for the whole labor market. Programmers can expect a median income of almost $80,000, and that’s just the median – there’s much more money to be made. And the market for mobile app development is just getting started.

Choosing an App Development Program

Now that the mobile app market has become so central to the computer industry, just about every school with a computer science program is adding on specializations – mobile app development courses, mobile app development programs, and even full mobile app developments degree programs. The most essential things are clear. A strong program needs to:

  • Have hands-on instruction with current technology
  • Focus on the most common programming languages
  • Give students experience in Apple and Android (which make up 99% of the market)
  • Be reputable and accredited
  • Provide a substantial return on investment (ROI)

One helpful aspect of the whole mobile app field for prospective students is that it’s so accessible. Working professionals in the field who already have a degree or experience in programming can simply add on a certificate for credentialing. New students who are interested in mobile app development programs can simply start from the beginning with that focus. With so many options, it can be a little overwhelming for prospective students to find their way.

The Value Colleges 50 Most Affordable Mobile App Development Programs ranking is designed to help students find the best choice for a future in mobile app development. Mobile app development programs may come from community colleges and public regional colleges, major public or private research universities, and even small liberal arts colleges and tech schools.

Value Colleges chooses only regionally accredited, reputable colleges and universities with a proven track record of quality. Otherwise, there’s only one qualification for the Most Affordable ranking – price. These are the lowest-priced, most reliable programs guaranteed to give students a real, bankable return on their investment.
