Historically Black Colleges and Universities are some of the oldest and most well-respected institutions of higher education in the country. Also known as HBCUs, these schools have a reputation for making education more affordable and accessible for all students, especially black students and other people of color. Even though that is the case, the cost can be a huge barrier when it comes to attending college. In this guide, you will learn about what an HBCU is and how you can pay for your HBCU education with a variety of available scholarships and grants.

HBCUs, or historically black colleges or universities, are a group of mostly land-grant schools in the United States that are some of the oldest and most prestigious in the nation.

Featured Programs

According to the U.S. Department of Education, there are 107 schools across the country identified as HBCUs. Of these, 56 are private and 51 are public colleges and universities. The 51 public HBCUs educate 2/3 of students, while 1/3 of students attend the 56 private schools. Twenty HBCUs are two-year schools and the other 87 HBCUs are four-year colleges or universities.

Historically, HBCUs have played a large part in making sure black students have equal educational opportunities and continue to be an important and valuable equal education opportunity resource. HBCUs are committed to serving their students and typically have high graduation rates.

Most HBCUs also offer educational support for students who may be struggling with their coursework. A broad range of remedial programs, developmental centers, reading labs, along with expanded tutorial and counseling services are available at most HBCUs to accommodate disadvantaged students or those who may need educational support.

Today HBCUs serve students of all races and from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. Racial diversity has been further enhanced by many foreign exchange students that some HBCUs host. Multicultural exposure and experiences are valuable to students, especially those who expect to work for large international companies after graduation and students who are studying in fields such as social work, psychology, urban planning, government, or economics.

Most HBCUs also enjoy a racially diverse faculty and administration. Faculties at HBCUs usually put as much effort into teaching and serving students as they do research. This allows students more individual time with instructors and less chance of falling behind on coursework. HBCUs are well-known for investing in student success.

What Is An HBCU?

As you just read, HBCU stands for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. This is a group of schools that were founded prior to the passing of the Civil Rights Act and they were designed specifically to help meet the needs of black Americans that were recently freed from slavery. They were created to serve as institutions of higher learning for black people back before school segregation was abolished. Even though the problems that black Americans face now are different than those they faced prior to desegregation, many of these institutions still stand as pillars in the world of black higher education.

They are dedicated supremely to the education and professional development of black communities, though it is important to note that anyone can attend these schools. Many of them are public land-grant universities, such as Alabama State University, Florida A&M University, and Virginia State University, among many others. There are also private HBCUs like Bethune-Cookman University, Stillman College, and Tuskegee University. There are just over a hundred HBCUs across America.

These universities offer a unique set of benefits for black students. Reports and polls show that black Americans that attended an HBCU experience more effective support throughout earning their degree and experience greater financial wellbeing after college. They also cost significantly less than other schools and have robust alumni networks.

HBCU Achievements and Excellence

In the past, over 80 percent of all black Americans who graduated with medical or dental degrees studied at one of two HBCUs: Howard University or Meharry Medical College. These schools still account for approximately 20% of medical and dental degrees awarded to black students in the United States.

Four out of five black federal judges studied at an HBCU. Three out of four of all black people with doctorate degrees received their undergraduate degrees at an HBCU. And three out of four black officers in the armed forces studied at an HBCU. Half of the black faculty members at traditionally white research universities completed their undergraduate studies at an HBCU.

HBCUs are the top colleges in the U.S. in awarding undergraduate degrees to black students in life sciences, physical sciences, math, and engineering.

Historically black colleges and universities also excel in preparing students to pursue master’s degrees, doctorate degrees, and professional training, with a high proportion of graduates at the bachelor level continuing their education further.

HBCU Scholarships and Financial Aid

In addition to the rich history and high-quality education, HBCUs are also known for offering plenty of opportunities to make college accessible and helping students find financial solutions to pay tuition and other expenses associated with getting a college education.

Many HBCUs offer lower tuition costs and fees than comparable traditionally white schools. Additionally, most HBCUs employ counselors and advisers who have experience in finding financial support to help students pay for their college education.

One part of making higher education affordable is the tremendous amount of scholarships available for students of HBCUs and students who plan to attend an HBCU.

Unlike student loans, which must be repaid, and grants, which are typically need-based, scholarships are most often awarded to students based on academic achievement or college entry exam scores. Scholarships do not ever need to be repaid, and since they are merit-based, students do not need to demonstrate financial need to receive them. Students may receive more than one scholarship to pay for college expenses and may accept scholarships in addition to other financial aid they may receive.

Applying for HBCU Scholarships

The qualifications for each scholarship are unique, as are the application deadline dates. Most scholarships are awarded annually, so if the application deadline has already passed for this year, students can keep a calendar and apply the next year. Keeping a scholarship application deadline calendar can be helpful so that students do not miss opportunities.

Students are encouraged to apply for as many scholarships as they qualify for in order to avoid graduating with student loan debt. Some scholarship applications are very simple, while others may be lengthy and require applicants to submit an essay. There are no fees associated with applying for scholarships, so there’s nothing to lose by applying. Keep in mind it’s unlikely for a student to receive every scholarship they applied for, so applying for many scholarships increases the odds of the student receiving money for college.

It’s important for students to read scholarship applications carefully to make sure they qualify for each scholarship they wish to apply for, that they have not missed the deadline for this year, and that they are willing and able to complete the application and essay if required. Scholarships amounts vary widely, so the requirements for larger scholarships may be more stringent and applications more time consuming than smaller scholarships. It’s recommended that students work with a school counselor or academic advisor if possible to create an individual strategy of applying for scholarships.

Applying for both large and small scholarships is ideal. Full-ride scholarships typically have more competition, while smaller scholarships may have fewer applicants. Some students find it easier to shine in a smaller field and may receive many small scholarships rather than a large one. Either way, every dollar received from a scholarship is a dollar the student doesn’t owe. The money from scholarships can really add up and allow students to avoid racking up student debt while getting an education.

Many HBCUs offer grants and academic scholarships to students. Additionally, there are many other HBCU scholarships offered by businesses and organizations. There are billions of dollars in HBCU scholarships and other financial help available for students who wish to attend or are already attending an HBCU.
