University of Michigan—Ann Arbor is a public institution founded in Detroit in 1817. The university moved to its present-day location is in Ann Arbor in 1847. North Carolina State University offers a comprehensive Computer Science Program with an interdisciplinary reach. The Bachelor of Science in Cognitive Science degree establishes a focus for students in the scientific study of cognitive phenomena such as reasoning, decision making, memory, learning, language, perception, and action. Cognitive (meaning thinking) science takes what we know of how human minds operate and simulates or enhances the options we have for technologically assisted evolution. Students are encouraged to apply their skills with using knowledge of human cognition to build ‘cognitively ergonomic’ tools and environments, to build devices that repair and augment cognitive skills and capacities, and to create artificially intelligent computers and robots. Research projects taking place in this field include the Rensselaer Artificial Intelligence and Reasoning lab, and Virtual Characters and Communication project, each of which undergraduates have the opportunity to participate in. RPI hopes to aid in recognition of Cognitive Science, that it may one day become as commonplace as the fields of physics or chemistry.

The University of Pittsburgh-Pittsburgh School of Computing and Information offers an innovative Bachelors of Science in Computer Sciences Program, which engages computational methods through active problem solving and critical thinking. The coursework in this program is fast-paced and intensive, and mathematics are highly stressed. Experiential learning is also a focal point, as students work with software development, database administration, and software testing.
