Top 25 Best Online Masters in Accounting Degrees
Find your perfect value college
Accounting is one of those professional career paths that is as close as they come to a sure thing. Management styles may change, technology may make technical skills obsolete, but as long as there is money and taxes, there will be a need for accountants. Accounting is also exceptional in that an aspiring accountant can begin a rewarding, secure career with nothing more than an associate’s degree or certification. However, that will only get graduates a lower, entry-level position in a firm or company; for real professional salaries, accountants need a bachelor’s degree in Business or Accounting, and a CPA license.
But what about working professional accountants who want more responsibility and authority? To lead a team of accountants, take over managerial roles, and become a leader in the field, most corporations, government agencies, and other organizations are going to expect a master’s degree. With many accountants finding their progress stifled by only having a bachelor’s degree, colleges and universities and business schools across the country are developing Master’s in Accounting, Master of Science in Accounting, and related degrees that busy working professionals can earn entirely online.

Why Should I Get My Accounting Degree Online?
Attending online graduate business programs like a master’s in accounting makes it easier for you to maintain your current career, take care of life’s needs, and improve your skill sets as an accountant for better employment options. The education you receive through an online master’s degree program is the same as if you were to attend school in-person while saving you time and money. The benefits of earning a master’s in accounting through an online program can sometimes far outweigh the advantages of attending an on-campus program, especially with prestigious schools offering online degree programs. You can attend the school of your dreams and benefit from earning a degree from a well-regarded university without the need to uproot your life.
Do I Need a Master’s to Be a CPA?
The short answer is no, you don’t need a master’s degree to become a CPA. But, you want to run a financial statement analysis like a champ, don’t ya? If you’re looking at getting a master’s in accounting or CPA, you’ll find that it’s easier to get your CPA first, then return to school for a master’s once you’ve decided upon the area of accounting you want to further engage in. In order to become a CPA, you have to earn the requisite amount of educational credit hours, pass all parts of the Uniform CPA Examination, and have 1 to 2 years of accounting experience. These requirements, known as the 3 E requirements, are the most direct pathway to becoming a CPA.
Specialize in CPA
When looking at the question of “what degree do I need to become a CPA?”, you’ll find that you need to earn your bachelor’s degree in accounting first, then take an additional 30 credit hours to qualify for the CPA exam. Upon passing the exam, you’re qualified to begin employment as a CPA and gain experience in the field. You can return to school to earn your MAcc in an area of accounting that appeals to you the most and improve your career opportunities. Another option is to enter into a combined bachelor’s and master’s in accounting that enables you to earn your master’s degree upon successful completion of your education.
What Can I Do with a Master’s in Accounting?
There are many types of jobs for master’s in accounting graduates in the public and private sectors. Masters in accounting jobs range from working for private clients or corporations to working for law enforcement and government. The field of accounting is one that underpins just about every aspect of business and government due to the fact the field is directly related to finance. Accountants track where money comes from, goes to, and what’s done with it. Some master of accounting jobs include:
- Finance manager
- Senior auditor
- Senior financial analyst
- Senior accountant
- Tax accountant
- Corporate controller
- Financial controller
Most master’s in accounting jobs are upper-level positions that have a higher-than-average salary, but also come with more responsibility. Earning your master’s in accounting helps you prepare for these master of accounting jobs and succeed in your career. Getting your MAcc can also help you prepare for a role working for a government agency or law enforcement if you want to serve the public in some form.
Will I Make More with a Master’s in Accounting?
Yes, you will make more with a Master’s in Accounting, especially when combined with your existing knowledge of accounting. The average master’s in accounting salary is $72,000 a year, but the earning potential over time is greater with a master’s than without. Having a master’s in accounting makes it easier to qualify for senior positions or specialized accounting roles that pay more for the knowledge you carry. As it stands, having a CPA gives you access to well-paying jobs in the field of accounting, but if you’re looking at how much does a CPA makes with a master’s degree, you’ll find it worthwhile to go back to school and get your master’s in accounting.
When looking at the difference between a business administration vs accounting salary, it’s quickly apparent that the average master’s in accounting salary is lower than the MBA. The role of an MBA is more complex than that of the MAcc and is compensated accordingly. However, someone with a master’s in accounting is capable of performing some of the complex duties (like say, running financial statement analysis) of an MBA and increasing their potential master of science in accounting salary. When looking at the question of how much does a CPA makes with a master’s degree and learning that the pay is much lower than the MBA, you might feel that it’s more worthwhile to earn your MBA and earn more than the average master’s in accounting salary. But if working in management isn’t your style, and you want to work in an area of finance and law, a master’s degree in accounting is a good option with a salary that scales up as you gain more experience.
