Prospective college students have a lot of questions to ask themselves today, not the least being “Online or residential?” and “Will this degree be worth the investment?”

With the first question, the answer depends a lot on you. Online can be a great option under the right circumstances – if, for instance, you’re already in the work force and want to improve your credentials to apply for better jobs, or you have a lower-level position in a company that is willing to help you get a degree. Yes – many companies will pay or assist paying for an employee to get more schooling. Think about it: a college education helps you both. It helps your employer to have better-trained and more qualified employees, and it helps you move up into better paying, more responsible positions.

As for the second question: well, that’s tricky. For students interested in a business degree, there are many, many shady business schools online that can’t wait to sell you a degree that the HR department will laugh about while they throw your resume in the garbage. A bad degree from a non-reputable diploma mill doesn’t get you anywhere in life. That’s why you need a trustworthy, researched guide to the top online business undergraduate programs.

To create our list, we consider three criteria:

  • complete cost of a degree
  • average debt for graduates
  • average starting salary for graduates

With these numbers in mind, we draw up a list of the 50 schools that find the best balance between what you’ll pay to get the degree, and how easily you’ll be able to pay for that education with the job you get from it. All of the schools on this list are accredited by the AASCB (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), which gives its seal of approval to less than a third of US business schools. Bachelor of Business Administration is the most common degree type, though there are others (such as Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science).

You should know, many of these programs are degree completion programs. That means you enter the online program in the later stages of a bachelor’s degree, usually after earning an associate’s degree somewhere else (like a community college or other accredited school), or after completing required core classes (freshman and sophomore level) in another college of the same university. In other words, you can’t just immediately enter all of these programs. Check the admissions requirements at the school’s website before you get too deep into applying.

One other warning: as with any online education, not all of these programs are available in every state. Again, the school’s website should provide clear instructions for applicants as to whether the program they want is available in their home state.
